Language Disorders
Language disorders involve difficulties in understanding and expressing language, affecting communication skills in areas such as vocabulary, sentence structure, and conversation. Language disorders can affect an individual’s ability to understand and express themselves, impacting their communication skills. Our clinic offers specialized therapy to help overcome these challenges and achieve appropriate language development. Our areas of expertise include the following:
Gestalt Language Processing
A communication development where individuals learn language in chunks or “gestalts,” rather than individual words, often using memorized phrases before gradually breaking them down into smaller, more flexible components.
Receptive Language
The ability to understand and process the language we hear or read, including comprehending vocabulary, sentences, and instructions. It is a key component of communication, allowing individuals to interpret and make sense of verbal and written messages in daily interactions.
Expressive Language
The ability to convey thoughts, ideas, and emotions through speech, writing, or gestures, focusing on vocabulary, sentence structure, and clarity of communication.
Pragmatic Language
The social aspects of communication, such as understanding conversational rules, tone, and nonverbal cues, ensuring appropriate interaction in various contexts.
Cognitive Communication
Encompasses skills related to memory, attention, problem-solving, and reasoning that are essential for processing and using language effectively in daily tasks and interactions.
Aphasia
Aphasia is a communication disorder that affects a person’s ability to speak, understand language, read, or write, typically caused by brain damage, such as from a stroke. While it impairs language ability, aphasia does not affect intelligence, and treatment often involves speech therapy to help improve communication skills.
Comprehensive Language Assessments
We start with in-depth evaluations to identify specific language difficulties, whether they involve understanding spoken language (receptive language) or expressing thoughts and ideas (expressive language). Our language assessments are comprehensive with a mixture of standardized testing, observation, parent/caregiver interview, and child-led play.
Tailored Intervention Plans
Our therapy sessions are individualized to meet the unique needs of each patient. Tailored intervention plans are customized strategies designed to address the specific communication needs of each individual, based on comprehensive assessments of their strengths and challenges. Regular adjustments to the plan are made to track progress, ensuring that therapy remains effective and responsive to the individual’s evolving needs. If you or your child is experiencing language delays or difficulties, our experienced team is here to help.
